Daniel finally pounded on the door. “Mom! It’s us!” Nothing. Then we heard something. A faint sound from inside. A chair scraping against the floor. We looked at each other. Daniel tried the door again. This time, it opened. Mom was standing in the hallway. She looked completely exhausted. But she was not sick. She was crying. That scared me more than anything. Mom never cried in front of us. She looked at the three of us and whispered, “I told you not to come.” I stepped closer. “Why?” She wiped her face and looked toward the kitchen.
